After a month long fight for top spot, on 25 January Butt Kickers resumed their place at the top of the league and would remain so all the way through to May to claim their third SFP title in a row.
History was made during March 1997 when Butt Kickers set a new record with the purchase of Robbie Fowler for £33.5m, who would go on to score just 10 points.
In the Inter League Cup, Aaron Fenns's Hot Hot Hot represented the SFP in the final against St James Fantasy League opposition. Unbelieveably Fenn took his first honour in his debut season, against much favoured Tom Rycroft's Apache Indians with a 5:1 win.
In the European Super League, which had grown to feature 9 teams from the SFP and St Jame FL, Magicmen would go on to claim the title against Butt Kickers.
